Job SummaryThe messaging nurse will be responsible for indirect care of patients by providing patient advice resulting in comfort, infection prevention, safety, and patient protection. The messaging RN will reinforce and provide clarification on patient advice as documented by the attending physician or resident, as well as provide guidance affecting wound care and post-wound care instructions. The messaging nurse will clarify self-care instructions post-clinic visits, and independently assess patient concerns and give advice within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act. The messaging nurse will triage telephone calls from patients, patient representatives, physicians, physician representatives, pharmacies, and dermatology team members. The messaging nurse will serve as a conduit for inquiries related to, but not limited to: prescription refills, medication use and side effects, clinically-related inquiries, and provide clinical guidance accordingly. The RN will be given access to incoming Cisco calls from adult general dermatology patients who have clinical inquiries. During extenuating circ*mstances, the messaging nurse may be asked to help room dermatology patients in faculty clinics. The messaging RN will help obtain intake information (chief complaint, list of medications taking /not taking, confirm pharmacy of choice, allergies, family history of skin cancer, pain rating) and ensure that patients are placed escorted into clinic rooms to support safe clinic flow.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide telephone triage based on established and standardized protocols and departmental policies and procedures as noted in the UCSF Ambulatory website;
Answer transferred calls from the Dermatology call staff and Cisco line;
Submit refills both electronically and as verbal orders to pharmacies;
Assess response to dermatology-related treatments, and give advice accordingly;
Provide instructions and advice concerning biologic injections;
Provide guidance and reinforce wound care instructions and advice on post-procedural side effects;
Update patients on prior auth status of their medications by actively logging directly into Cover My Meds;
Actualize and use dot phrases that have been vetted by our Dermatology Chair and Medical Director;
Route appointment requests to the appropriate team by utilizing the established Appointment Routing Sheet;
Document all encounters with patients on Apex via MyChart, Telephone Encounters, and Documentation; and
Resolve and “done” messages found in various Apex folders that include, but are not limited to: CRMs, Rx Refills, Patient Advice, Staff Message, Telephone Encounters, and CC’d Charts.
The Messaging RN will serve as a conduit for inquiries regarding After Visit Summaries, insurance and scheduling questions, Accutane, and patient inquiries that may require escalation to the Patient Care Manager or Attending physician.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
